Obituary for Genia Olender

On January 14, 2019, after an extended illness, Genia, loving wife and mother of three, passed away at the age of 72 in the company of her devoted husband of 51 years, Joe. Genia was born on January 31, 1946 in Belgium and arrived in Canada with her parents at age 3. She graduated from Pauline Johnson Collegiate (1964) and became a teacher for the Brant County Board of Education. Genia is survived by her three daughters, Jenna (Eric Groocock), Jillian (Clinton McLeay), and Joanna (Fr. Gleb Pistruga) and two granddaughters, Edie Olender and Masha Pistruga. She is also survived by her sister, Natalie (Mike) Padden and their children and grandchildren.She was an avid reader and gardener, loved camping, and volunteered as a Guider with the 5th Company Girl Guides at St. James for many years. She shared her passions for travelling and arts and crafts with her family. In her retirement, she also enjoyed aquafit and spending time with her friends from the pool. Family and friends will be received at the TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 10 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre or to a charity of choice. Genia’s family sincerely thanks the wonderful nurses at the Brantford General Hospital’s cancer clinic and the nurses, PSWs, and staff in the palliative care ward of the hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. Thanks also to family and friends for their kind support and gifts of food and time.
